British startup Photogram AI has announced a new camera called Alice Camera that features artificial intelligence and other unusual features.

It is described as an "AI accelerated computer camera" that aims to provide better communication from a DSLR camera and better quality than a smartphone.

Smartphones have made tremendous advances in photography in recent years. Alice tries to bring the worlds of standalone cameras and computational photography together.

Alice is an interchangeable lens camera that features a dedicated AI chip that "raises the bar for machine learning and pushes the boundaries of what a camera can do."

“We are a team of engineers, data scientists and content creators, and we have spent the past 10 months building Alice because, in our view, the cameras have been sorely lacking in meaningful innovation over the past 10 years,” says the startup. "We believe you deserve a more suitable optical device for the next decade."

On the front of the camera is a Micro Four Thirds lens socket in front of the 11-megapixel Quad Bayer HDR sensor, which features large pixels for low-light conditions and high dynamic range.

The aluminum back of the camera has a universal phone holder (it just holds the phone in place) designed as your phone as a camera screen (using the companion app). Since the camera and the phone are linked wirelessly, the phone can also be used as an external monitor at a distance. The smartphone system will also allow easy camera firmware and app updates over time.

The manufacturer says AI will help improve everything from autofocus and exposure to "color science" in the camera.

Photogram AI says Alice is currently in the prototype phase of the concept and will be launching with an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign in the fall. The company receives pre-orders from interested clients who can deposit 50 pounds (~ $ 64) through the company's website.

The company aims to officially start shipping the production version of Alice to customers in the summer of 2021, at a retail price of £ 750 (~ $ 955).
