ZEISS ZX1: Full-Frame Camera with Android & Lightroom

The ZEISS ZX1 is better late than not!

Two years ago, during Photokina 2018, we first saw a prototype of the ZEISS ZX1.

Photokina 2020 was supposed to take place during May 2020, and it is easy to think that ZEISS would have announced the launch of the camera at that time.

The question we can ask ourselves right now is simple: Does this small, full-frame camera still make sense nowadays

ZEISS ZX1 features

ZEISS ZX1 is a compact camera - 5.6 x 3.7 x 2.6 142/142 x 93 x 66mm at 1.76lbs / 800g with battery - featuring a 37.4MP full-frame CMOS sensor. It can capture up to 3 frames per second. For photographers, the shutter design provides flash synchronization at all shutter speeds and allows for quiet shooting. There is the best Sigma TTL flash protocol compatible option.

The camera houses a ZEISS Distagon T * 35mm f / 2. There is no doubt that the image quality will be on par with ZEISS's reputation for creating high-quality, extremely sharp lenses. The optical design consists of eight elements in five groups with two double-sided aspherical elements to reduce spherical aberrations and reduce distortion.

For filmmakers, the ZEISS ZX1 might not be the most exciting camera here. In fact, it can only shoot 4K video at 30p and 1080p at 60 frames per second maximum. There is a microphone, headphone jack, built-in microphone, and a USB Type-C port for connecting an external monitor or powering / charging the camera.

As you can see, the ZEISS ZX1 has minimal I / O ports. The camera does not have any memory card slots, as it records everything on the internal storage memory of 512 GB. The concept behind the ZEISS ZX1 is about shooting / editing / sharing.

Shoot, edit and share

The ZEISS ZX1 is powered by Android OS. And it has built-in Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. The main idea is to capture, edit and share photos / videos inside the camera.

In fact, the camera comes with the built-in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC software that allows you to edit your photos directly on the camera. The program allows you to set all traditional RAW parameters. Once you are satisfied with your edit, you can directly share your photo to your smartphone to share it on social media. If you want to edit your photos further. You can sync the camera with Lightroom on your computer.

Also, the USB Type-C port allows you to backup the camera to an external hard drive. You can back up your cameras to a cloud storage service, and even a NAS.

The ZEISS ZX1 is primarily a camera for non-computer use, but you still have the ability to connect it to your computer.

Price and availability in the market

The ZEISS ZX1 is available for pre-order now on B&H for a whopping $ 6,000.00. At the moment, there is no information about the shipping date yet.

For this price, the ZEISS ZX1 is one of the most expensive compact cameras available on the market, and it's even $ 1,000.00 more expensive than the Leica Q2.
