Fujifilm has announced a firmware update with pixel-shifting multi-shot functions to the GFX100. With the advertised software, the camera can merge 16 RAW images into one 400-megapixel image.

The feature works by combining a 102-megapixel sensor, an X4 processor, and an in-body image stabilization system to move the image sensor in 0.5-pixel increments and record high-resolution RGB pixel information over the course of 16 photos.

Fujifilm's new software is called Pixel Shift Combiner and it doesn't just act as a necessary piece of the puzzle for creating large photos. But it can also be used to make capture easier when using Pixel Shift Multi-Shot.

With this new feature, Fujifilm says it can create images that "faithfully reproduce almost every detail" and "achieve optimal image quality at 400 megapixels."

Fujifilm says this feature is especially useful for archiving or cultural preservation work, as photographers must document intricate details of historical artifacts or artworks. This technology has been applied in the GFX100 IR, which adds an infrared component to archival and forensic image capture.

In addition to its Pixel Shift Multi-Shot feature, Fujifilm made some other changes to the GFX100 in firmware version 3.00.

Firstly, image ratings recorded in [Jpeg + RAW] mode are now applied to both Jpeg and RAW files. The company has also resolved an issue that in multi-flash shooting scenarios where the EF-X500 is used as a lead, the flash in some groups sometimes did not fire properly. The company also promises to improve the accuracy of the Eye AF function for the front eye.

The new firmware is now available and can be downloaded from this link.
