Aputure announced 4 new Bowens mount LED lights. They are the Aputure Amaran 100D, 100X, 200D and 200X which are smaller and cheaper than the popular 120D and 300D headlights.

By using the moniker that Aputure refers to as a low-priced arc light fixture, it's easy to identify Amaran's point source line by name. The lights 100 and 200 depend on the capacity of the electrical unit. D and X relate to balanced daylight and the two colors, respectively.

Characteristics of Aputure Amaran lights

All four new lights offer nearly identical features. Where Bowens are pinned to the front. Brightness can be controlled from 0-100%, with a cooler and DC power supply but it comes with an AC adapter (not to be confused with the larger 120 / 300D units). Plus, there's a built-in umbrella stand for use with spotlights.

The light matches the new Sidus Link mobile app control and built-in lighting effects8.

The Aputure Amarans lights don't require a large console, there's a wheel integrated into the rear of the stabilizer to control brightness (plus color in the X variants). And just a standard external DC to AC adapter. All four formulations were priced to have a rating of CRI 95 and TLCI 95.

D versions are rated at 5,600K, and numbers for Class X counterparts are issued from 2,700K to 6,500K. Battery solution mentioned but not provided. It is expected that a separate unit will replace the DC / AC inverter for the light to operate on the batteries.

What is the difference for 120D / 300D lights?

Naturally the biggest difference people will make is the price. It's $ 200 for an Aputure Amaran 100D light, which means it's less than half the price of the 120D.

And the next most important component is probably the console, or lack thereof. The 120D and 300D both require a DC / AC switching controller, battery board and control options for installation.

Amaran simply has a regular DC / AC converter, which makes the whole package more compact.

The design is also a little different. The stand is integrated with the lighting unit. This makes it compact.
