Tamron announces to owners of Sony APS-C cameras with truncated sensor 17-70mm f / 2.8 Di III-A VC RXD. It is a standard zoom lens with a full range of 25.5-105mm. This range makes it one of the most versatile zoom lenses for Sony APS-C cameras.

The Tamron 17-70mm f / 2.8 VC has an optical construction of 16 elements in 12 groups. Including two glass-cast aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element to maintain what the company promises "high-precision, edge-to-edge performance".

The Tamron 17-70mm f / 2.8 VC features

The lens features a moisture-proof housing, a fluorine coating on the front element, and a 67mm filter size that the company notes is the same as for the Tamron line of lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras.

The 17-70mm f / 2.8 has a close focus distance of 7.5 inches at 17mm, which Tamron says is better than other similar zoom lenses on the market for APS-C cameras. When zoomed in to 70mm, widening the focus distance to 15.4in is still excellent.

Automatic fox

The "RXD" in the lens' full name refers to the "Rapid eXtra-silent stepping drive" which the company claims is particularly quiet and ideal for video use. It is compatible with many of the features that Sony provides in its cameras, including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF. Its compatibility with real-time tracking is not mentioned.

Anti Vibration

The optics also include Tamron's popular Vibration Compensation (VC) lens stabilization system. Tamron says that additional cutting edge algorithms optimized for this model and a dedicated independently operating MPU all combine to compensate for vibration.

This technology is promising in working with both in-body and without image stabilization cameras. And when shooting video, "artificial intelligence technology" is used to improve stability compared to other lenses. What Tamron means by "artificial intelligence technology" is unclear and what the lens specifically does in the video is also not explained in the company's press releases.

Price and availability in the market

The Tamron 17-70mm f / 2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for Sony APS-C mirrorless E-mount cameras is scheduled to be released on January 14, 2021, for $ 799. However, the company maintains that due to the current global health crisis, the release date and / or product offering are subject to change.
