DJI has dominated the drone market in recent years. Now it appears that the Japanese camera giant Sony is wanting to enter this market and secure a stake for itself. Back in November 2020, Sony teased its new drone project with a mysterious Youtube video. Today, during the virtual CES2021 presentation, Sony finally officially announced the drone and revealed more details about it. Let's take a look at Sony Airpeak.
Sony is marketing this aircraft as "the smallest unmanned aircraft in the world capable of carrying alpha camera systems". This means, in fact, that the drone is not small. At least not small enough to compete with the DJI Mavic line. It's a bit like the DJI Matrice or FREEFLY Alta airplanes. There is almost no technical information about the Sony drone yet, so I am only writing what I have noticed from the posted videos.
The main camera of the drone is mounted on a triple axis. It is capable of carrying Sony's mirrorless cameras on Sony Alpha models. This means that it can carry any non-Sony mirrorless camera.
Sony tested the Airpeak drone in Austria during the VISION-S road test. The drone is equipped with a Sony a7S III full-frame mirrorless camera. This exam makes sense given the camera's autofocus capability is high in low light.
Looking for professional pilots to cooperate with Sony
Sony announced that it is looking for professional drone users (who are currently using drones professionally to create content or provide additional services to customers) in the US and Japan to become collaborators and participate in the Airpeak project.
