Atomos has announced a new AtomX expansion module, the Atomos AtomX CAST. It is a video switch compatible with Atomos Ninja V and Ninja V+ screen recorders and basically converts the monitor into an advanced quad-HDMI switcher.

Atomos recently launched the Atomos Ninja V and Ninja Stream + Monitor and Recorder. The Ninja V+ screen recorder has amazing capabilities, including support for up to 8K30p and 4K120p Apple ProRes RAW recording via HDMI and SDI. But, unfortunately, the Atomos Ninja Stream will only be launched as a rental unit initially, and this was not the most exciting news for most users.

If you want to add functionality to your Ninja V/V+ screen recorder, you must use Atomos' AtomX expansion port. However, there are two modules already available, including the AtomX SDI and the AtomX SYNC. To give filmmakers even more options, Atomos just released the AtomX CAST, which can turn the Ninja V/V+ into a powerful, compact multi-input switcher.

Features of the Atomos AtomX CAST Switch

The Switcher Atomos AtomX CAST is one of the largest expansion modules in the entire AtomX family and takes the concept to another level.

In fact, you will have to insert the Ninja V/V+ into the CAST unit, connect the AtomX port, and secure the screen recorder to the CAST unit via a screw on top of the unit. You will end up with what looks like a completely new product.

At the bottom of the CAST module, you'll find four function buttons and four camera selection buttons. All buttons light up to easily see which camera is being broadcast and which to select next. Also, you can use the + Atomos Ninja V/V to switch between all your sources directly.

At the top of the unit, you'll find four HDMI input ports, an HDMI (software) output port, an AC input, and a USB port.

Switcher and live recorder

With four HDMI inputs “You get professional conversion of broadcast and recording quality to professional-quality codecs like Apple ProRes and Avid DNx,” the CAST unit feels like a versatile unit. But it is likely that the main use of this expansion will be direct switching mode.

In fact, the USB port on top of the Atomos AtomX CAST Expansion Unit can be used to load logos, bottom third titles, or masthead graphics on top of your videos. Then, you can connect your AtomX CAST to your computer — with UVC support, your computer will see it as a webcam — to make a live broadcast of the program's output. Of course, you can broadcast live to different platforms like Zoom, Skype, Twitch, Facebook Live, etc.

With the Ninja V/V+ docked in the AtomX CAST, you can use the 5-inch touch screen for setup operations. Also, your screen recorder doubles as a "traditional" monitor with all the monitor/exposure/focus tools included in the Ninja V/V+. Then switch to multi-display to see all four inputs simultaneously, complete with volume monitoring.

Last but not least, the Ninja V/V + HDMI output can be used as a secondary output that can be set up as a repeater, preview monitor or custom multi-display output.

Price and availability

The Atomos AtomX CAST Switch will be available in July 2021 for $399.00. The Ninja CAST bundle that includes the Atomos Ninja V and AtomX CAST will also be available next month for $949.00.
