Chinese company Kinefinity has released a new full-frame cinematic camera, the MAVO Edge 6K. It features a new 3:2 6K sensor and supports Cinema DNG Uncompressed RAW as well as ProRes recording up to 6K Open Gate at 75fps.

The camera also comes with internal eND filters, a redesigned user interface, and a wide range of I/O ports. It is available for pre-order starting at $9999.

In the past few years, Kinefinity has been slow to release new cameras. Their last big announcement dates back to 2020, when the Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K was first introduced.

Kinefinity MAVO Edge 6K: A New Cine Camera from China's Leading Competitor for High-End Filmmaking

Kinefinity MAVO Edge 6K Sensor and Recording Modes

The Kinefinity MAVO Edge 6K has not changed the form factor of the MAVO Edge 8K, but it is now with a 6K 3:2 full-frame sensor. The camera features the original KineMOUNT. According to the manufacturer, the new sensor outperforms the existing 6K cameras in the lineup: the MAVO LF and the S35 MAVO.

Like many cinema cameras these days, the MAVO Edge 6K chip is a native dual ISO sensor (800 and 5120 ISO). The lowest value should provide the highest dynamic range and up to 6 stops to protect against highlights. On the other side of the spectrum, a higher ISO should provide cleaner shadows with less noise in low-light environments.

The camera is capable of shooting at up to 75 fps in 6K Open Gate and 160 fps in 4K. Currently, only different flavors of ProRes recording are available, ranging from the 10-bit ProRes 422 LT to the 12-bit ProRes 4444 XQ. In this scenario, recording with the pre-installed Kine LOG3 Gamma helps improve dynamic range.

However, the company announced that Uncompressed RAW will also be available with a future update coming in the second quarter of 2022. Adopting the CinemaDNG standard, this format will preserve sensor data in its purest form, thus turning the MAVO Edge 6K into a beast.

Storage and energy options

To enable high-resolution RAW recording at high speeds, the MAVO Edge 6K camera relies on two PCIe-3.0 SSD slots. The company offers a proprietary media solution, the KineMAG Nano 1 TB, but the good news is that third-party NVMe M.2 2280 hard drives are also compatible.

The same amount of flexibility is provided to users when operating the camera. In fact, the battery panel features a hybrid design to host 14.8V V-mount and BP-U batteries.

The body is also equipped with several output ports to power camera accessories, including a D-Tap, 12V RS and a 12V lens port. However, these are just a few of the many I/O connections that the camera has.

New monitor screen

All camera settings can be fully controlled using either the simple button layout on the left side of the body or the KineMON-5U2/7U2 touch screens. These large screens feature a 2,000 nits' daylight-viewable panel that now comes with a completely redesigned user interface for a more intuitive approach. This is made possible thanks to the new firmware KineOS 7.0, which also offers advanced features such as support for the Cooke/i metadata protocol.

The MAVO Edge 6K Cinema Camera is also compatible with Kinefinity's Micro-OLED Viewfinder and provides two independent 1.5/3G SDI ports for previewing different versions of the same image. Kinefinity has also equipped the camera with Wi-Fi connectivity to quickly stream H.264 image to smart devices.

The list of input and output connections that this camera boasts is quite extensive. To me, the MAVO Edge 6K appears to be built like a tank and is ready for all types of production. Its chassis is populated with all kinds of I/O ports, including control, timecode, RS232 lens protocol, on/off, RJ Gigabit Ethernet and USB-C port. In particular, the USB-C port can also be used for quick offloading of shots directly from the camera.

Body design and built-in ND filters

The new MAVO Edge 6K shares the same chassis design as its 8K sibling, but with an aluminum frame instead of carbon fiber. The camera has a compact form factor that can fit the DJI Ronin RS2. It weighs only 1.6 kg / 3.6 lbs, which isn't much for a full-frame cine camera of this spec.

In such a compact chassis, the company has also been able to add a set of internal continuous eND filters that take in from 2 to 8 stops of light. Furthermore, Kinefinity also revealed that it is working closely with Tilta and SmallRig to develop rigging accessories for the camera.

Price and availability

The new Kinefinity MAVO Edge 6K is now available for pre-order and will hit shelves in May 2022. The full-frame cinema camera comes in two variants with little difference to official retail prices. In fact, the Cyber Edition will cost you $500 more than the raw steel gray model, which has a suggested retail price of $9999.

The company also offers two options of accessory packs, Core and Professional Pack. Depending on the color of the camera body, its price changes as follows:

  • Raw Steel Gray - Basic Package: $14,099
  • Raw Steel Gray - Production Package: $16.399
  • Cyber Edition - Core Pack: $14,099
  • Online Version - Professional Package: $16,899
