Why are lightweight drones so popular? In some countries, drones weighing less than 250 grams fall into the “toys” category and are therefore much less complex than heavier drones.

Magic Series Mini-250g Drones

The announcement of the DJI Mini 3 Pro aircraft is a big leap in the generation of small and lightweight mini aircraft. It became professional after adding the name “Pro” in its name.

DJI Mini 3 Pro 48MP Rotating Drone Camera

The DJI Mini 3 Pro drone features a 1 / 1.3-inch 48MP CMOS camera sensor with dual native ISO. The lens has a focal length of 24mm (full frame equivalent, 82.1°) and an aperture of f/1.7. The unique feature of the DJI Mini 3 Pro 3-axis fixed camera module is that it can rotate 90 degrees to better capture vertical content. In addition, the camera can now search because it is placed in the foreground. Raw JPEG or DNG images are available in 4:3 8064 x 6048 (48 megapixels) or 4032 x 3024 (12 megapixels) formats.

Although the sensor has a higher resolution of 48MP in still mode, DJI appears to be buffering the pixels to 12MP (4032 x 2268) in video mode resulting in 2.4µm pixels for better low-light performance.

Video up to 4K60 with D-Cinelike

When it comes to available resolutions and frame rates, the Mini 3 Pro drone offers the following video modes:
  • 4K: 3840 x 2160 @ 24/25/30/48/50/60fps
  • 2.7K: 2720 x 1530 @ 24/25/30/48/50/60fps
  • FHD: 1920 x 1080 @ 24/25/30/48/50/60fps
  • Slow Motion Shooting: 1920 x 1080 @ 120fps

The maximum bitrate is now 150Mbps (the maximum bitrate is 2 100Mbps) in either MP4 or MOV (H.264 or H.265 compression). HDR video recording is also available at frame rates up to 30 fps. DJI also offers digital video zoom of up to 2x in 4K, 3x in 2.7K and 4x in Full HD.

The good news is that the Mini 3 Pro now also offers a color profile called D-Cinelike (in addition to the regular color profile). However, all video modes are 8-bit only.

The first mini drone with omnidirectional sensors

For the first time in DJI's Miniseries of drones, the Mini 3 Pro features 3-way obstacle sensing provided by forward, backward, and downward optical sensors. Previous generations of the Mini series only had downward-facing sensors.

According to DJI, these sensors enable Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems (APAS) 4.0, which automatically detects and finds a safer path around obstacles in flight (not available while recording 4K/48, 50, 60 fps, 2.7K/50 or 60fps, or 1080p/120fps video). Sensors also enable the entire FocusTrack suite, which allows users to automatically identify a subject that the drone will hold within the center of the frame during flight while automatically planning a safe flight path.

Auto shooting mode

As with every new DJI drone, there are a variety of auto modes available with the Mini 3 Pro as well:

  • FocusTrack set (Available up to 30fps only).
  • Spotlight 2.0 keeps the subject in frame while manually flying.
  • Point of Interest 3.0 revolves around the subject at a specified range and flight speed.

  • ActiveTrack 4.0 tracks the topic in two selectable ways:
  • Tracking: The aircraft tracks the subject at a fixed distance
  • Parallel: the aircraft tracks the target while flying next to it at a fixed angle and distance
  • Quick shots
  • Droney: The plane flies back and forth with the camera locked on the subject.
  • Helix: The plane flies up and rotates around the object.
  • Missile: The plane is flying up and the camera is down.
  • Circle: The plane rotates around the object.
  • Boomerang: The plane flies around the subject in an elliptical path, ascending as it flies away and descending on its return.
  • Asteroid: The aircraft creates a shot that starts as a spherical panorama high above the target and ends with a normal shot hovering close to the target.
  • MasterShots: Keeps the subject in the center of the frame while performing various maneuvers in sequence to create a short video clip.
  • Hyperlapse: Creates a dynamic time lapse where the aircraft will fly along specific paths during capture.

2 different batteries

Interestingly enough, DJI has decided to offer two types of battery packs for the Mini 3 Pro. The regular battery (2,453 mAh) included with the drone provides a maximum flight time of 34 minutes and keeps the drone's weight at 249 grams. The total take-off weight is also written on the battery itself to avoid confusion.

The second type of battery pack (called Intelligent Flight Battery Plus) provides up to 47 minutes of flight time (3,850mAh capacity), but the drone will exceed its 250g take-off weight by about 40g.

As optional accessories, DJI will offer a two-way charging hub that charges the Mini 3 Pro Smart Flight batteries in sequence, as well as a 30W USB-C charger that charges the Smart Flight Battery to 0-100% in 64 minutes and Smart Flight Battery Plus in 101 minutes.

DJI RC Controller

DJI, the Mini 3 Pro features the O3 transmission system, which provides 1080p live viewing from up to 12 km away (FCC standard).

The DJI RC Controller is a new type of remote controller from DJI that features a built-in 5.5" touchscreen with DJI Fly app ready. However, the drone will be available with the regular controller (or without any controller) as well.
